Video Summary
The CMSS AI Task Force webinar explored how AI is transforming clinical guideline development and use in healthcare specialty societies. Helen Burson, CEO of CMSS, introduced the task force's efforts developing AI inventories, risk matrices, and curricula to responsibly integrate AI into clinical practice. Dr. Cliff Hudis from ASCO detailed their AI-powered Guideline Assistant, launched in 2025, which makes oncology guidelines more accessible, providing transparent, citation-linked AI responses based strictly on ASCO content. ASCO aims to accelerate guideline updates from 12-15 months to 6-8 weeks through a guideline generator tool in collaboration with Google Cloud and publishers. From AGA, Dr. Siddharth Singh and Dr. Dennis Shung presented their human-AI teaming approach for evidence review, especially title and abstract screening in systematic reviews. By combining dual AI models with expert human oversight, they reduced workload by over 90%, enabling living guidelines and cutting development time from 24 to 12 months. They emphasized prompt engineering and ongoing performance evaluation to ensure rigor and safety. Both societies highlighted the importance of human-in-the-loop processes, secure data management, and adapting to rapid AI advances. The discussion addressed challenges like scalability, integration with electronic health records (notably Epic), and the potential future shift to AI-generated real-time guidance replacing traditional documents. Panelists encouraged smaller societies to adopt incremental AI steps, leveraging existing tools and shared experiences. The webinar underscored AI’s growing role in enhancing clinical decision support while maintaining expert validation to uphold quality and trust.
