Video Summary
This webinar discussed recent research on learning preferences among younger physicians (under 45) in the U.S., revealing key insights to inform medical and surgical education strategies. The survey, involving 528 respondents from 32 societies, showed that younger physicians prefer online education for CME and MOC credits and acquiring new knowledge, while hands-on workshops and annual meetings remain best for skills development and networking. Important factors in education format choice include location, networking opportunities, and availability of CME/MOC credits, while presenter identity and society affiliation were less influential. Notably, over 85% rated CME/MOC credit access as very or moderately important.

Richard Pan from the AMA discussed challenges and opportunities in evolving continuing medical education (CME) and credit systems. He emphasized moving from mere credit-earning to precision education and developing "master adaptive learners" who tailor learning to their practice needs via assessments and reflective learning plans. Pan highlighted issues such as recognizing informal learning, better measuring outcomes and behavior change beyond hours spent, and the difficulties of accrediting cutting-edge, potentially conflict-of-interest-rich education. He also sees promise in using AI to analyze practice data to personalize learning.

The dialogue stressed the importance of collaboration between societies and AMA to innovate CME delivery and credit, mindful of real-world feasibility. Opportunities to integrate informal learning, self-reflection, and patient outcomes into CME were identified, aiming to enhance educational impact and physician engagement.
